If you’re new to competing, here’s what you should know:
If you are a returning competitor:
If you are not competing this time, but you’re curious about it:
We strongly encourage non-competitors to join the Kids Tournament Prep classes on Sundays from 12-1pm offered until the end of April. Or if you’re an adult or age 14 and above, to join BJJ on Tuesday and Thursdays at 7:30pm or Open Mat on Sundays from 1-3pm. Just because you’re not competing, doesn’t mean you can’t help someone who is! We always need extra bodies and rolling partners.
You can also come to the tournament to be a spectator and get a feel for it. Cheer on your teammates!
Talk to us if you'd like more info!
- You must have an active Jiu-Jitsu membership with us.
- You must not register with the rank you have, but register as a White Belt, even if you are yellow, orange, or green….you MUST register as a BJJ White belt. This is your competition rank and requires a new BJJ White Belt. You will receive separate promotions on this belt (there are 4 white stripes given out based on your experience). New BJJ white belts are $15 + tax.
- You must create a Smoothcomp account. You will always log in to this account to sign up for tournaments. Follow the links to register through Smoothcomp.
- If you’re a child/youth, you must sign up for Tournament Prep classes offered seasonally on Sundays from 12-1pm. We have Tournament Prep starting Sunday Feb 1st from 12pm – 1pm and will go to the end of April. There is a separate fee for this class (about $6.50 per session paid up front).
- If you are an adult, it is advised that you sign up for BJJ on Tuesday/Thursday nights at 7:30pm. You will only be charged $25/month for this add-on program.
- You or your child will need to know your exact weight for the competition (with the gi on). We have a scale at the dojo, so please triple check this weight because they will not let you compete if you are over by 2 lbs on the day. You will be weighed in in the morning of the tournament.
- Kids competing with the gi usually start in the morning. They start with the youngest first and then work up the ages from there.
- If you’re interested in no-gi, you MUST attend no-gi sessions on Wednesdays because it’s a different pace with different grips on the opponent with no-gi. You must also wear appropriate no-gi clothing. Talk to us if you are interested in no-gi competition. See photos below.
If you are a returning competitor:
- Please use your Smoothcomp profile to register for this tournament. DO NOT CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT. It is just more admin work for us to contact Smoothcomp and merge the accounts. Your (or your child’s) fight record is saved in your profile. We need this data for stripe and belt promotion. If you forgot your login, follow the prompts to reset your password.
- Please weigh yourself BEFORE registration. This is imperative. Don’t guess! We’ve had so many last minute changes and disqualifications due to “guessing” your weight. Try to be exact!
- Please DO choose the right weight category. IT MATTERS!! Especially for kids. When they are in a division with heavier opponents, it can make or break their experience. Be mindful of this.
- If you’re 13 and under, please sign up for Kids Tournament Prep on Sundays from 12-1pm. The front desk is the only place you can sign up. It is not available online.
- Choose the correct rank. Your competition rank is different than the one from class. You are a white belt until you're not :)
